NOW SOLD: 1986 TOYOTA HJ61 LAND CRUISER - £35,000

This is the first-year 1986 HJ61 running the factory 12H-T turbo diesel and H55F 5-speed manual — the exact drivetrain combination collectors hold out for. Fully restored back to bare metal and driven less than 1,000 km since.

Sold new in Australia, it’s spent its life in a dry climate — no salt, no rust, no harsh winters. The result is the kind of straight, corrosion-free base that’s almost impossible to find today, especially at this level. The restoration has been done with a factory-correct approach, preserving originality where it matters while rebuilding everything mechanical to a higher standard than new.

First-year 1986 production brings the right details — round headlights, original 12H-T, and the factory H55F 5-speed. It’s the spec, the condition, and the provenance enthusiast want.

The 60 Series is what built Toyota’s reputation for indestructibility, and the 12H-T is the engine that cemented it. Paired with the H55F 5-speed, this is the drivetrain that crossed continents and earned its place as one of the toughest setups Toyota ever produced.

This example has been restored properly, kept true to factory where it counts, and upgraded where it improves longevity. The body is straight, the finish is clean, the interior is original and preserved, and mechanically it’s been taken beyond factory standard.

Once registered in the UK, it qualifies as a historic vehicle — zero road tax, MOT exempt, and ULEZ exempt. A usable, daily-capable classic with none of the usual running restrictions.

Restored first-year HJ61s at this level rarely come to market. This is the right year, the right drivetrain, and the right condition.

Nothing to do — just get in and drive.

SELLER’S NOTES
This is one of those cars that’s hard to replicate and even harder to find. First-year HJ61, factory 12H-T, factory H55F — it’s the combination everyone wants, but very few actually come up, especially restored to this level.

What sets this one apart is the base and the approach. A dry Australian car with zero corrosion, taken back to bare metal and rebuilt properly, not just refreshed. It still presents with the originality collectors look for, but underneath it’s been gone through properly — tighter, stronger, and more usable than it ever was from factory.

The gearbox build alone is a standout — upgraded internals, fully rebuilt, and effectively over-engineered. It shifts how it should, but it’s built to handle far more than standard.

It’s the kind of 60 Series you can actually use — drive it daily, take it on long trips, or just keep it as part of a collection. No sorting, no chasing issues, no compromises.

Finding a first-year HJ61 is one thing. Finding one with the right drivetrain, from the right climate, restored to this standard — that’s a different story entirely.
