TRIP OF A LIFETIME, OR JUST ANOTHER WEEKEND.

Land Cruisers are beloved all over the world for their ruggedness and legendary off-road capability, and Africa is no exception. Recently, Hogg & Swan had the privilege of restoring three FJ40s and one FJ45 for a group of LandCruiser enthusiasts in South Africa. These classic vehicles, known for their reliability and charm, were exported to South Africa following the restoration where their new owners wasted no time putting them through their paces.
A Journey Begins: From South Africa to Botswana and Back
Within a week of their arrival, the excited owners were ready to test why their new 4WDs had earned the Land Cruiser badge. Their adventure began in Northern South Africa, weaving through Botswana, before looping back to South Africa. It wasn’t just a road trip; it was an expedition to prove these Land Cruisers could handle everything the African landscape could throw at them.
From tarmac roads to rugged off-road trails, through scorching hot days and freezing cold nights, the LandCruisers were tested in all conditions. There were, of course, a few bumps along the way—some tweaking here, a flat tyre there—but these minor setbacks only added to the adventure. With tools on board and a passion for the open road, the drivers handled every challenge, reinforcing the bond between man and machine.
The Rare Sight of Classic LandCruisers in Africa
As the group drove through remote parts of South Africa and Botswana, heads turned at the sight of four classic LandCruisers—especially the short-wheelbase FJ40s, a rare find in this part of the world. For many onlookers, it was a jaw-dropping sight, and some might say it caused more than a few snapped necks. The sight of these iconic vehicles cruising together through the wilderness was a reminder of just how special and sought-after these models are.
A Weekend to Remember: Swapping Cars and Building Memories
At night, after a long day of driving, the Land Cruisers were parked together under the African sky, their round headlights glowing by the campfire. In the mornings drivers would take the opportunity to swap cars and try out each other’s vehicles, forming opinions on their favourites. Interestingly, the choice often came down to colour preferences, since all the FJ40s were nearly identical—except for the larger FJ45.
By the end of the trip, the drivers had forged not only memories but also a deep connection with their Land Cruisers. Although the vehicles were ready to continue the adventure, the drivers needed a bit of rest before their next journey. This weekend adventure was just the first of many road trips to be enjoyed in these restored classics, lovingly brought back to life by Hogg & Swan.
